IPL: Brendon McCullum named Kolkata Knight Riders head coach

Indian Premier League franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, on Thursday, named former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum as its head coach.

In the past, McCullum played for the franchise from 2008 to 2010, and re-joined in the 2012-13 season. He was part of the KKR side, which won its first IPL title in 2012. He was also part of the Caribbean Premier League side Trinbago Knight Riders from 2016-18.

In the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008, McCullum gave IPL a perfect start as he scored an unbeaten 158 for KKR in the inaugural match of the tournament against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

“It’s a great honour to take up this responsibility. The Knight Rider franchises in IPL and CPL have become iconic and have set the standard in franchise cricket. We have fantastic squads in both KKR and TKR and I along with the support staff will be looking to build on the success both franchises have enjoyed,” McCullum said.

KKR’s CEO, Venky Mysore said: “Brendon has been an integral part of the Knight Riders family for a long time. His leadership qualities, honesty, positive and aggressive style, combined with his natural ability to bring the best out of the teams he has been part of, makes him ideally suited to lead KKR and TKR as head coach.”

Former South Africa star Jacques Kallis was KKR’s head coach till last season, but he parted ways a few weeks ago.
