‘Roar of the Lion’, a five-part documentary series on Chennai Super Kings, was released on Wednesday. M.S. Dhoni narrates how the three-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champion endured the two-year suspension handed to it by the Lodha committee, its comeback and the challenges Dhoni had to overcome while leading the Indian team in the immediate aftermath of the controversy.
“As the sequence of events unfolded, I knew there was a punishment coming the team’s way but the quantum of it was surprising,” Dhoni says in the documentary.
Dhoni led the Chennai franchise to its third IPL title in 2018, making it a dream return to the competition after the team served out a two-year ban for its management’s role in the 2013 spot-fixing scandal.
Explaining the ramifications of indulging in match-fixing, Dhoni adds, “If I engage in such (match-fixing) an act, it’ll have a larger implication. In cricket, you have close finishes in limited overs and Tests. There have been many surprising results where your mind simply refuses to believe the outcome. Fans then start attributing the result to match-fixing. I don’t think I will go through anything tougher than this (ban).”
The show also features other prominent names in Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Shane Watson, Dwayne Bravo, Michael Hussey, Matthew Hayden, Stephen Fleming, Kris Srikanth.
The 2019 edition of the IPL begins March 23 with Chennai Super Kings hosting Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai.
