World Cup 2019: Pietersen compares Eoin Morgan’s England to Ricky Ponting’s Australia

Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has heaped rich praise on Eoin Morgan’s side, likening them to the “great Aussie side” of the early 2000s.

England have been a dominant force in ODI cricket ever since they came up with a complete rejig after the 2015 World Cup wherein they were knocked out in the group stages after just 2 wins from 4 matches.

Under Eoin Morgan, England have transformed into a powerhouse in ODI cricket. Having scored 11 300-plus scores since the 2015 World Cup, England have been boxing out oppositions with their batting might.

Even without Alex Hales, who has been dropped from the World Cup squad after a failed drug test, England have a strong top-order with Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy featuring in it.

With Eoin Morgan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali and Joe Denly in the middle-order, England are firm favourites to win their maiden World Cup title, this year at home.

Talking up Eoin Morgan’s side, Kevin Pietersen wrote on Twitter: This England ODI side is like that great Aussie side…if Hayden didn’t get you, then Ponting would if they missed out, Gilchrist would. This England team, the same, Roy, Bairstow, Buttler etc SOOOOO good!”

Pietersen’s comments came after England made light work of a 349-run target against Pakistan in the third ODI of a five-match series in Bristol on Tuesday.

Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales added a 150-plus opening stand in no time and England built on it wonderfully well to gun down the target in just 44.5 overs.

Jonny Baitsow smashed 128 from just 93 balls to make sure England sealed an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the series.

England had won the 2nd ODI against Pakistan on May 11 after posting 373 runs on the board in 50 overs. Jos Buttler smashed 110 from just 55 balls, hitting 9 sixes and 6 boundaries to bat Pakistan out of the contest.
