The ruling Janata Dal (United) in Bihar has hailed the new liquor prohibition law as the best gift to the people of the state on Gandhi Jayanti.
“There could be no better gift than what Nitish Kumar has given on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, and we will approach the Supreme Court against the high court’s order and get alcohol prohibited in Bihar,” ANI quoted JD(U) leader K.C Tyagi as saying.
The Bihar government on October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti) implemented a new liquor law ‘Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016’ to re-implement the alcohol ban in the state.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Sunday emphasised that new liquor law would be reinforced in the state, and would also go in for appeal in this matter if the need arises.
Nitish also said that liquor prohibition would improve society.
“Before prohibition there was utter chaos in some villages, but after the ban there was an environment of peace,” claimed Nitish.
The Bihar government has challenged the Patna High Court’s decision striking down the Bihar prohibition law by filing a special leave petition in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court will be hearing the matter on October 7.
The Patna High Court on September 30 struck down the state’s Prohibition of Liquor Act which banned the consumption of Indian Made Foreign Liquor.
