A local court in Rajsamand on Friday sent murder accused Shambhu Lal Regar to 15 days judicial custody, district superintendent of police Manoj Kumar said.
In what is being termed as a hate crime, 36-year-old Regar had hacked to death and burnt Afrazul, a migrant labourer from West Bengal, on December 6. The accused also got his 14-year-old nephew to film the gruesome act and uploaded it on social media, evoking countrywide horror and outrage.
In addition, Regar also recorded other videos where is seen making a string of inflammatory remarks against Muslims. He was arrested by police the next day from a relative’s house in Rajsamand’s Kelwa and was under police remand until Friday.
The victim, Mohammed Afrazul, 48, was a migrant labourer from West Bengal who was working in Rajsamand for the last 12-13 years. The hate crime also stoked communal tensions in Rajsamand and neighbouring Udaipur for more than a week.
During police interrogation, Regar revealed that he had killed Afrazul by mistake. The police said that Regar intended to kill one Ajju Sheikh, another migrant labourer, as he was allegedly in touch with a woman whom Regar considered as a sister, or by some accounts, had a love affair with.
