After a day of confusion, the route of Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s roadshow has been cleared by district police and special protection group (SPG). Covering around 12km, Gandhi will take out a roadshow via Tonk Road to Ramlila Maidan.
District police, SPG and the Congress differed over the route of Rahul Gandhi’s roadshow on August 11 as the party proposed Tonk road, while SPG and police suggested JLN Road citing security reasons. After several rounds of discussions and visits to the route, the SPG and district police agreed on the Congress proposal with minor changes.
Gandhi will address people from a specially designed bus during the roadshow, which will start from Jaipur airport around 12.30pm and conclude at Ramlila Maidan. The rally will pass through Jawahar Circle- Fortis Hospital (on JLN Road) and shift to Tonk Road – Gopalpura bridge- Laxmi Mandir- Gandhi Nagar- Rambagh Circle- Narayan Singh Circle- Trimurti Circle- and Albert Hall, a senior Congress leader, who did not want to be named, said. The leader claimed that Gandhi had used the same bus for roadshows during Gujarat and Karnataka assembly elections.
Party workers will welcome Gandhi at over 14 points during the roadshow. However, there has been no formal announcement on Congress chief’s visit to Govind Dev ji temple after addressing people at Ramlila Maidan.
“After becoming the party president, this is Rahul Gandhi’s first visit to the state. He will sound the poll bugle and launch party’s election campaign for the upcoming assembly polls. The workers are upbeat with his visit,” said Sachin Pilot, state party president.
Besides, discussing party’s roadmap and strategy for the elections with workers, Gandhi will highlight the “mis-governance by Vasundahra Raje-led BJP government” , he said.
Jaipur district Congress chief Pratap Singh said, “The proposed route has been agreed and there is no more dispute.” Earlier in the day, addressing reporters, Singh said people want to welcome Gandhi but the state government is suggesting a different route from what we proposed. Both the roads – JLN and Tonk roads are of same width, now it is the government responsibility to ensure Gandhi’s safety and that people can meet him.
“Government should not distance him from the public in the name of security. We have already agreed to the suggestion of avoiding SMS hospital as it would affect patients and is a congested area,” he added.
