BJP’s Rajasthan election co-incharge Sudhanshu Trivedi on Friday said questions were being raised within the Congress about party president Rahul Gandhi’s calibre to be prime minister.
Trivedi said recent Congress entrant and MP candidate Shatrughan Sinha has commented that he sees PM material in leaders other than Gandhi.
“Till now the leaders of the grand alliance that Congress was trying to put together did not see Gandhi to be a fit candidate for the post of prime minister. But for the first time a Congress MP candidate and star campaigner is not able to see the PM material in Gandhi, which he can see in Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati,” said Trivedi, addressing a press conference here.
Sinha in Lucknow said that he sees Akhilesh and Mayawati as potential PM candidates, as they are hard-working and have the capability.
Trivedi said Congress should answer whether the questions raised within the Congress about Gandhi’s capability for the PM post is an indication of distrust and doubts about his calibre.
Trivedi also attacked BSP chief Mayawati and SP patriarch Mulayam Yadav, the once arch rivals who shared the stage at an election rally in Uttar Pradesh after a gap of 25 years.
He said alliances between opposing parties have happened many times. “But this is the first time that two leaders who have filed cases accusing each other of murder have come together.”
“Jaani dushman (arch rivals) are talking of friendship, but can they tell us if the cases they filed against each other have been taken back. The cases are under trial, but the leaders are hugging each other. This shows that the reality is different from what they are portraying. Their only agenda is to defeat Modi; they are trying to mislead the public.”
Attacking the Congress government in Rajasthan, he said it had prevented implementation of central government schemes such as PM Kisan Nidhi Samman and Ayushman Bharat and not handed out EWS certificates to eligible candidates.
He said development work in the state has stalled due to lack of resources and the government has cheated the youth, farmers and elderly. “The focus of the government is Jodhpur… Congress is only trying to save its Vaibhav (Gehot’s son) while the state suffers,” said Trivedi.
Trivedi evaded a reply on Pragya Thakur’s statement that former Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare had died because she had cursed him. Trivedi said he was not aware of her statement but that the sacrifice of any security forces personnel was a matter of concern for the country.
Thakur is BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Bhopal and an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case.
Congress spokesperson Satyendra Raghav said Trivedi’s statement was factually incorrect. “Sinha never said this. This is a lie. The BJP has no issues to raise and no answers to give for their government’s non-performance so they are raking-up such issues.”
