Congress president Rahul Gandhi will begin his campaign in the state from Banswara on Tuesday, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi began the Bharatiya Janata Party campaign for Lok Sabha election here.
He will be addressing public meeting in Baneshwar Dham in Banswara district. Gandhi will also be addressing marathon public meetings here on Thursday.
All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Avinash Pande said Gandhi’s programme will be there in Jalore, Ajmer and Kota on Friday.
At some places, sources said, instead of public meetings Rahul can hold road shows such as in Ajmer or Kota. He will address his first meeting in Jalore at 10 am, thereafter will leave at 1.30 pm for Ajmer and at 4 pm he will address the meeting at Kota.
At all three Lok Sabha seats, in last four elections it’s the BJP, which has won thrice. Congress won Jalore LS seat in 1999, while on rest two won in 2009.
On the elections, Pande said it is an important election, but PM Modi is not talking on issues and promises made in 2014 elections. “What have they done on internal security? ₹15 lakh in bank accounts, unemployment? This election is not Rahul Gandhi versus Modi but to protect the Constitution and for development,” said Pande.
Pande has left for Banswara on Monday to inspect the arrangements of the meetings. He will hold meeting of district presidents, MLAs, frontal chiefs, zila pramukh, block presidents and local leaders.
Of the nine assembly seats in Banswara-Dungarpur Lok Sabha seat – three each are with Congress and BJP, two with Bhartiya Tribal Party and one independent.
This will be Gandhi’s third visit to the Lok Sabha seat. In 2017, he had addressed Kisan Akrosh Rally and assured loan waiver. “We will put pressure on government to waive farmers’ loan,” he had said. In 2018, before the assembly election, he visited Sagwara area in Dungarapur district. Dungarpur, a tribal district in south Rajasthan, is part of the Vagad region.
Political experts believe that Gandhi’s rally in Banswara is planned to regain its traditional tribal vote bank. Congress has been connected with tribal vote bank and to strengthen and build its connect, the party is holding the meeting. “Looking to BTP’s emergence, Congress and BJP are focusing on the region,” said Narayan Bareth, political analyst.
