Despite temperature crossing 43 degree Celsius, Jodhpur parliamentary seat where Congress candidate and chief minister Ashok Gehlot’s son Vaibhav is pitted against BJP candidate and union minister Gajendra Singh Sekhawat saw a high voter turnout of 67.59% till 6 pm.
In the eight assembly constituencies under the parliamentary area, the highest 75.91% polling till 6 pm was reported from in Pokran assembly segment. Till 6 pm, voting was registered at Phalodi and Lohawat constituencies — 67.27% and 67.28% respectively. In Luni, voter turnout was the lowest at 62.79%.
Maximum voter turnout has increased in the three urban assembly constituencies of Jodhpur compared to the 2018 assembly elections. The maximum turnout increase was reported from Sardarpura contstituency, from where CM Gehlot was elected. Around 71.26% voting was recorded in Sardapura as compared to 66.17% in assembly. Voting recorded 65.43% and 66.81% respectively in Jodhpur City and Soorsagar assembly constituencies, the two other assembly segments in Jodhpur.
Long queues were seen at polling stations throughout the day, as men and women and specially abled braved the heat to cast their votes, despite the mercury hitting 43 degrees. The adminishad put up shamianas to shield people from the fierce sun and had made arrangements for drinking water. No violence and a very few instances of electronic voting machines (EVM) malfunction was reported.
Ashok Gehlot along with his son Vaibhav and other family members voted early in the morning at Vardhaman Jain School located in the Mahamandir area.
Talking to the reports here, Gehlot said that Congress is winning in the state, while BJP is contesting without issues.
Gehlot’s grand-daughter and Vaibhav’s daughter too spoke to the media and appealed to people to vote in large numbers for her father.
BJP candidate Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also voted with the family members. He said the media has made this an election between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Ashok Gehlot while this election was one between nationalism and dynasty.
