‘A lifelong crusader for social justice’: Condolences pour in for PS Krishnan

Expressing his condolences over the demise of former Union Secretary PS Krishnan, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao remembered his commendable contribution in formulating social welfare policies. 

Similarly, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, expressed grief and conveyed his condolences to his family members.

Former Union Secretary PS Krishnan, 86, who was regarded as a champion of the oppressed and exploited sections of society, passed away in New Delhi on Sunday. 

His demise has come as an immense loss to those who worked with him. Several Dalit, Bahujan and other activists recalled his efforts to eliminate caste inequality.

Taking to Twitter, RS Praveen Kumar Swaero, secretary of Telangana Residential Educational Society, said, “Telangana Welfare Schools pay homage to the legend, PS Krishnan, who breathed his last today. His demise is a great loss to the social justice sector in this country. India needs such crusader-bureaucrats who stand for the deprived without fear today.” 

Describing Krishnan as a crusader of social justice, activist Kavitha Krishnan, wrote, “Rest in power PS Krishnan – the rare bureaucrat who was a lifelong crusader for social justice, SC/ST/OBC reservations. He was the driving force behind a living repository of knowledge, experience on social justice policy making for decades. What a loss!”

DMK MP Kanimozhi, wrote, “Saddened to hear the demise of #PSKrishnan retired bureaucrat, who was instrumental in implementing the Mandal Commission recommendation that paved the way for reservation to the socially and educationally backward, granting constitutional status to National Commission for SCsSTs and the SC-ST Prevention of Atrocities Act,1989. A great loss in the arena of social justice.”

CPI leader, Subashini Ali said, “The dalit shoshan mukti manch expresses deep sorrow at the death of Shri PS Krishnan. We salute his commitment to struggles against caste oppression, his encyclopaedic knowledge of the laws, policies concerning the SC, ST and OBC sections and his support to activists and movements.”

Journalist Shoaib Daniyal wrote, “Terrible to learn PS Krishnan has passed away today. The few times I spoke to him, even in his advanced age, he was as sharp as a razor. Mr Krishnan contributed immensely to the social justice movement in India.”

Krishnan was selected to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1956 and served in Andhra Pradesh. As a bureaucrat, he sought to take the government to the people, especially the Dalits, Adivasis, minorities and other oppressed communities, and worked towards eliminating caste inequalities.
