17-yr-old student dies in Andhra, kin allege 108 ambulance was in Governor’s convoy

In a tragic incident, a student died in Vijayawada after he collapsed on Friday evening due to the non-availability of ‘108’ ambulance, which had allegedly been deployed for the convoy of the Andhra Pradesh Governor at Raj Bhavan.

According to media reports, the student, identified as 17-year-old Rakesh, a native of Chikkavaram village, had finished writing an exam and collapsed as he was planning to return home.

While the students took him to the Gannavaram Community Health Centre, doctors advised that he should be shifted to the Government General Hospital in Vijayawada.

The family, who rushed to the spot after coming to know of the incident, alleged that officials at the health centre did not have an ambulance as it had been deployed for the Governor’s convoy.

Following this, the family got into a heated argument with the staff at the health centre and staged a protest.

“When we approached the hospital authorities, they said that they don’t have an ambulance and asked us to hire a private ambulance. The hospital doesn’t even have oxygen cylinders…We lost our son only because of the negligence and lack of proper facilities in the hospital. If at all we could get the 108 ambulance in time, we could have saved our son,” Rakesh’s father was quoted as saying.

“We did try to assign an ambulance and the patient was also informed the unavailability of a nearby service at that particular time to make alternate arrangements,” Suresh Kamle, project head of 108 Andhra Pradesh Emergency Response Service (APERS), told the Times of India.

Meanwhile, the District Medical Health Officer (DMHO) has initiated a probe into the incident and stated that they were adequately equipped with ambulances but all of them may have been busy during the time of the incident.

A detailed report has been sought on the matter.
