Some district magistrates (DM) in Uttarakhand have either taken to singing or hired local artistes for a campaign to spread awareness among people about their duty to vote in the April 11 Lok Sabha election in the state.
The district magistrates of Haridwar and Champawat have recorded songs written and sung by them in local language and also shot videos to motivate voters to come out and cast their vote.
The videos by Champawat district magistrate Ranveer Singh Chauhan and Haridwar district magistrate Deepak Rawat have been widely shared on the social media.
“Participation in electoral process with one’s valuable vote is not only the voters’ right but also duty. I want to give this message to our voters. We should inspire the voters, especially youngsters, to exercise their franchise on polling day to elect a strong government and to strengthen our democracy,” said Chauhan.
The videos were made under the systematic voters’ education and electoral participation (SVEEP) — a programme of the election commission.
The SVEEP is a programme of multi-interventions through different modes and media designed to educate citizens, electors and voters about electoral process. It aims to increase awareness and participation in electoral process.
The lines of the song written by Chauhan say, “Han haq hai tera, usko kar le tu ada (Voting is your right, exercise the franchise)”. Rawat has come up with the song, “Apne adhikar ka samman karo, chalo matdan karo (Respect your right, and come out and vote)”.
Rawat could not be contacted for a comment till the filing of this report.
Rudraprayag district magistrate Mangesh Ghildiyal is also running a campaign – “I Shall Vote” – to educate voters.
“Under this campaign, we are reaching out to all our voters through the booth-level officers (BLO) and making the voters take the pledge after explaining them why it is important to vote. Recently, with the festival of Phool Dei, we sent cards to houses of voters through children along with flowers with the message, wishing for prosperity of the country by voting along with wishes for their families,” said Ghildiyal.
Garhwali theatre artiste Lakhpat Rana and folk singer Naveen Semwal have also joined the campaign in the Rudraprayag district.
