Writer Sivasankari’s memoirs released

Suriya VamsamNinaivalaigal, the two-part memoirs of writer Sivasankari, was released on Monday at a function that was well-attended by several of the author’s fans, friends and family.

Launching the second volume, Tamil Manila Congress president G.K. Vasan, a family friend of Ms. Sivasankari, said she was a great orator and lover of Tamil. “Two years ago, she donated close to ₹1 crore to the underprivileged. Similarly, a few days ago on her star birthday, she donated another ₹1 crore for social causes,” he said. Monday was the author’s 77th birthday.

The book’s publisher ‘Vanathi’ Ramanathan, said for Ms. Sivasankari, writing was a penance. The first copy of the first volume was released by the author’s sister-in-law Bhama Ramachandran and copies were received by her family members Meera, Neeraja and Surya.

Speaking about the memoirs, Ms. Sivasankari said the book came to be because of her long-time companion Lalitha’s last wish. Journalist G. Meenakshi of Mangaiyar Malar transcribed all the chapters. “Since I was at home for over a year after two heart attacks, the memoir helped divert my mind, and led me down the memory lane,” she said. Vice-chancellor, Dr. MGR Medical University, and orator Sudha Seshayyan read out excerpts from the book.

Seetha Ravi of Kalki said: “Her language is simple and she is always honest in what she writes,” she said.

Writer Thiruppur Krishnan said Ms. Sivasankari’s writings always showed her concern for society. Bharathanatyam guru Padma Subrahmanyam said that Ms. Sivasankari, herself an accomplished dancer, had recently created an endowment at Narada Gana Sabha to provide for arangetrams for two disadvantaged children.
