The Saidapet police on Wednesday arrested a 37-year-old woman for allegedly orchestrating the murder of her sister, an employee of Chennai Corporation. Though the suspect claimed that the victim died following a surgery, the police suspected foul play and later found evidence of murder. According to police sources, Jaya, 34, a road worker was living alone in her father’s house in Saidapet.
Jaya rented out three portions of the house and shared the income with her sister Devi. Police sources said that Jaya recently developed an intimacy with a youth and Devi was irked over this.
Under these circumstances, Jaya was found lying dead in her house on Monday. Devi who visited the house informed the police that her sister died after a surgery. However, post-mortem suggested a different cause of death. Perusal of CCTV footage in the vicinity showed Devi entering the house of Jaya along with two other men before she was found dead. On interrogation, she admitted to have orchestrated the murder of her sister. She paid her relative Ethiraj and another person ₹10,000 to kill Jaya. They strangled the victim to death.
