What safety? Students seen hanging from window of train

Barely a fortnight after five persons travelling on the footboard of an overcrowded train died at St. Thomas Mount station here, a video clip of a group of college students hanging on to the windows of a moving suburban train near Tiruvallur has surfaced on social media.

The 30-second clip, which surfaced on Monday, shows three students whistling and banging on the train as it enters the Putlur station near Tiruvallur. One of the students is seen walking on the windows. The students are heard shouting slogans praising Pachaiyappa’s College and the route.

The Arakkonam police suspect that the incident took place last Friday. They are trying to identify the students using the footage. “We will take action once the students are identified,” police sources said.

“It is a frequent occurrence on trains in this sector. It reduced after the railway police cracked down on students travelling on footboards after videos of a few of them brandishing weapons surfaced,” said Umesh, a commuter from Pattabiram.

A Government Railway Police officer said that they had deployed personnel on trains to curb the menace. “However we cannot track all of them,” he said.
