With films starring Ajith Kumar and Rajinikanth hitting theatres on Thursday, it was a close race at the box office on Day 1.
According to entertainment industry sources, Viswasam, with Ajith Kumar in the lead, collected over ₹14 crore across Tamil Nadu on Day 1 while Rajinikanth’s Petta managed to garner over ₹11.5 crore.
But globally, Petta swept the market and was far ahead. Though the exact numbers for the global market could not be ascertained, trade sources said that in the US and other markets Petta did well.
Since both films had big names, analysts who usually storm social media platforms with tweets and messages on box office numbers remained silent. One of them said, “I don’t want any fan war on social media. I will post the consolidated data after this weekend.”
A theatre owner said that both films ran to full houses and were booked for the week ahead too.
“All box office trackers are quiet as no one wants to rub the other star the wrong way. In a way this is better. People should stop focusing on these numbers and get back to doing business,” he added.
Entertainment industry tracker Ramesh Bala, in a tweet, said that at the Chennai box office on Day 1, Petta made ₹1.12 crore while Viswasam collected over ₹88 lakh.
“At the State-level, Viswasam led the show as the screen count was in its favour. Most of the single screens down south went for Viswasam. The logic is exhibitors knew almost six months back that this movie was slated for Pongal. Petta release was announced only last month,” he added.
According to his analysis, Viswasam collected ₹16.5 crore in Tamil Nadu while Petta made ₹11.5 crore.
Rajinikanth’s previous film, 2.0, garnered ₹80 crore across India on its first day. It was the second highest for an Indian film after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (released in 2017), which made over ₹150 crore.
In Chennai, 2.0 collected ₹2.42 crore on Day 1. Overall in Tamil Nadu, the movie collected ₹18 crore (on the first day).
