Traffic violations rampant at Sholinganallur junction

Traffic violations are rampant at Sholinganallur junction, where the Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Kalaignar Karunanidhi Salai and Medavakkam Main Road meet.

According to traffic rules, motorists driving on the western lane of Rajiv Gandhi Salai (towards Thoriapakkam) should take a U-turn at the Accenture traffic-signal, if they want to head towards Semmenchary and other areas beyond that. However, they do it much ahead, at the Sholinganallur junction itself, where U-turn is not allowed.

, Many of them instead take a right-turn and left-turn at Sholinganallur junction to access Medavakkam Main Road and eastern lane of Rajiv Gandhi Salai respectively which is a violation.

Similarly, motorists coming from Kalaignar Karunanidhi Salai are supposed to take a left turn at the intersection, go straight and take a u-turn near Infosys office, if they want to drive down Rajiv Gandhi Salai towards Thoraipakkam.

Instead, motorists drive on the wrong side of Kalaignar Karunanidhi Salai in order to drive down Rajiv Gandhi Salai towards Thoraipakkam, quickly. They violate the lane rules to avoid taking a detour. “Due to such violations, we are forced to slam on our brakes. Near-miss accidents are common at the intersection, especially in the late hours, when traffic is thin. Besides, during the rush hour, such violations lead to traffic congestion,” says S. Sivam, a motorist.

The safety of pedestrians are also compromised when some motorists try to cross the intersection in this manner.
