In a bid to beautify tenements in Perumbakkam, Gudapakkam and Navalur, the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) has planned a slew of measures, including planting of trees on the premises, promoting eco-tourism and setting up a butterfly park.
According to TNSCB officials, 81,200, 3,673 and 7,316 square metres of land are available at Perumbakkam, Gudapakkam and Navalur respectively. However, as on date there are not many trees at the site.
“From July, we plan to convert the sites into green belts. We won’t be planting saplings, but semi-grown trees that are six-feet tall. They will have tree guards to protect them and the residents themselves will be given charge to maintain them. We expect some good foliage in the next five years,” said a senior TNSCB official.
Besides, the TNSCB, with the help of other departments, is planning to desilt a canal close to the Perumbakkam tenement and convert it into a picnic spot with kids’ play area, pedal boats, walkers track and other facilities.
“We are attempting to raise funds through the Asian Development Bank. As of now, the residents of Perumbakkam don’t have any place for recreation nearby. This will also attract people from outside and with the increased footfall, the place will also become safer and see some development,” said the official.
