SHRC seeks report on 14-year-old’s electrocution

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has sought a report from Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner and Chairman and Managing Director of Tangedco into the electrocution of a 14-year-old boy in Mugalivakkam in Chennai on Monday.

The report from both the authorities are to be submitted within four weeks.

Violation of rights

After taking suo motu cognisance of a media report over the incident, SHRC member D. Jayachandran, in an order, sought to know why the dug up road was not relaid properly by the officials of the Greater Chennai Corporation and Tangedco. This amounted to negligence and violation of human rights of the general public, he added.

The Commission also questioned whether any action was taken by the Commissioner, Greater Chennai Corporation, Chennai, and Chairman and Managing Director, Tangedco, against those responsible for the incident.

It also sought to know whether the authorities have taken steps to provide assistance to the family of the deceased.

Recent incident

Dheena from Mugalivakkam was electrocuted while crossing a waterlogged area. The road, that was recently dug up to lay electric cables for streetlights, was not relaid properly.

Dheena was a Class IX student in a government school.
