A Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) stopohver opposite MTC terminus in Iyyapanthangal on Mount-Poonamallee Main Road needs to be shifted.
With buses trying to enter and exit the terminus and a row of buses halting at the stopover, the spot in front of the terminus turns chaotic. Traffic gets blocked on both sides of the road.
Also, this stopover eats into one-fourth of the width of the main thoroughfare.
Moreover, commuters do not wait inside the bus shelter as it is dilapidated. They prefer to wait on the main thoroughfare and this also contributes to the congestion on the stretch.
Another factor that is is adding to the congestion is the narrowness of the Mount – Poonamallee Main Road here. At present, the Mount – Poonamallee Main Road, which is maintained by the State Highways Department, has been widened between St. Thomas Mount and Sri Ramachandra Medical College cum Hospital (SRMC) in Porur. But, the widening of the stretch between Iyyapanthangal and Mangadu, a distance of around 3 kilometres, is getting delayed due to issues in land acquisition.
Taking these problems into account, it is necessary that a traffic police personnel be deployed at this spot.
“Many a time, the auto-rickshaw drivers regulate traffic in front of the terminus,” says K. Venket, a resident of Poonamallee.
“Appropriate steps will be taken to widen the stretch especially near the bus terminus,” says a State Highways official.
