Scientist duped of ₹33 lakh by conmen

A man complained to the police that he had been cheated to the tune of ₹33 lakh by unidentified persons who contacted him through email and promised a huge investment in his oncology research project. The victim is a biotechnology professional.

He was contacted by Sergey Yu Smolin, CEO, Uralmash, Russia, via LinkedIn and promised an investment of $2 million.

In October 2018, one Peter George arrived in Chennai with a cash consignment.

“He told me that it contained ‘defaced’ US dollars. We checked a few and found them to be genuine,” the victim said. George then told him that a special solution was needed to clean the notes. Then, he left for Delhi to arrange for a container of the solution, but it never arrived.

“After many discussions, they agreed to give me the solution for half the price. I travelled to Delhi to collect it. Back in Chennai, I found the bottle broken. Again, the conmen collected money to send a fresh one,” the complaint read.
