A total of 100 programmes including walks, talks, film screenings, food events, exhibitions and quizzes have been planned as part of the Madras Week celebrations from August 18-25.
Addressing a press meet here, Madras Musings editor and historian V. Sriram said that the programmes will cover a lot of ground — from the city’s ancient history to modern developments.
He said that organisations including Madras Literary Society, Anna Nagar Social Awareness Group and Kreeda Traditional Games are joining the celebrations.
Talk on medicare history
Sashi Nair of the Press Institute of India said that they had slotted five programmes this month including a talk on the medicare history of Madras at 5 p.m. on August 19 by Mr. Sriram and Screening of The Anglo-Indians of Madras – Case Study on Pallavaram at 5 p.m. on August 22.
Mylapore Times editor Vincent D’Souza said that a Madras tour has been planned for city schools. “We plan to take students from South Chennai to the north of the city and those from North Chennai to show them the south. We have two volunteer guides, the tours will be in the mornings. They will start outside Fort St. George and will be 90 minutes long. The schools need to bring students and teachers in their buses. The tours are open till August 31 on weekdays,” he said.
Kreeda founder Vinita Sidhartha said that on August 17, they would have their inter-corporate event for traditional games with aadu puli aattam, pallanguzhi, anju kallu and hoop stick (tyre game). The registration fee would go towards funding games for government schools.
Quiz master R. Mahesh said he would be holding a quiz on Madras between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on August 24 at Kasi Arcade in T. Nagar.
