Multi-level car parking lots in congested localities planned

The city and its suburbs are set to get multi-level car parking lots along congested stretches, which have inadequate parking spaces.

Following a meeting of officials from the Chennai Corporation and other line agencies on Tuesday, work on identification of locations suitable for the development of multi-level parking lots has started. Similarly, local administration officials of suburban areas will also start identification of suitable locations. Land parcels of the Chennai Corporation and land owned by government departments would be identified for setting up the multi-level parking lots.

Grabbed land

Land given to Chennai Corporation by individuals in congested areas would also be traced. “Many parcels of land in congested areas have been grabbed by some persons. We have to use the land for development of multi-level car parking spaces,” said an official of Chennai Corporation.

On Monday, the draft final report of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has also pointed to the need for development of multi-level car parking lots.

“Provision of mass parking facilities should not always be the norm. However, mass parking facilities are needed in order to pedestrianise commercial areas. This is the basis of the proposal. For example, the proposals for multi-level car parking lots in T. Nagar and George Town are linked to the pedestrianisation in such commercial areas,” said an official.

22 locations

The civic agencies have started a study on the 22 locations mentioned in the draft final report of Comprehensive Mobility Plan. For example, a parcel of land on Barathi Salai in Triplicane would accommodate 330 cars. Chennai Central would get a multi-level parking lot for 270 cars.

Another one near Ega Theatre in Kilpauk would accommodate 300 cars. Plans are on to set up parking spaces at Chetpet (325 cars), Saidapet Metro (320 cars), Mandaveli MRTS (200 cars), Anna Nagar Roundtana (330 cars) and Nungambakkam Sterling Road (400 cars). Suburbs such as Tambaram and Chromepet would also get multi-level parking lots to accommodate more than 700 cars.
