Mother kills newborn, arrested

In a gory incident, a 25-year-old woman residing in Kasimedu murdered her newborn child by dropping her on the ground twice and later pretended that the baby had died due to asphyxiation. She was arrested on Wednesday.

According to the police, Celestine, 25, and her husband Sathyaraj, 32, a daily wage earner, lived on Singaravelan Street in the Kasimedu police station limits. They have a one-and-half-year-old daughter and around 18 days ago, the couple had another girl child. On November 12, the baby was gasping for breath. She was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

“During investigation we found something amiss in what Celestine said. However, we wanted to wait for the post-mortem report. We got the report on Wednesday and it said that the child had head injuries,” said a police officer.

Following this Celestine was arrested. During inquiry it was found that Sathyaraj was unhappy that the second child was also a girl. “She claims that she was frightened that Sathyaraj would leave her,” said a senior police officer.
