Just 20% of Smart Cities projects completed so far

Just 20% of the work on ₹971 crore Smart Cities Mission projects have been completed in the city.

After the Centre launched the Smart Cities Mission in 2015, the Greater Chennai Corporation commissioned only six projects, officials said. Among the completed projects is the grievance redressal system ‘Namma Chennai App’ at a cost of ₹9.5 lakh, 28 smart classrooms at ₹1.75 crore and conversion of 1,772 sodium vapour lamps to LED lights at ₹3.44 crore.

With the BJP-led rule at the Centre almost completing its term, Chennai Smart City Limited is set to speed up work, officials said. This month, tenders will be floated for major projects estimated at over ₹300 crore, they added.

Long road ahead

Despite criticism, tenders for construction of stormwater drains will be floated this month at an estimated cost of ₹150 crore.

“The administrative approval has been obtained on September 12 for the drains,” an official said.

Tenders will be floated for a grade separator at the Teynampet junction connecting Theagaraya Road and Eldams Road at a cost of ₹152 crore, sources said. Tenders will be called for a skywalk connecting the T. Nagar bus terminus and the Mambalam railway station at an estimated cost of ₹29.65 crore.

Some holdovers

On the ongoing projects, civic officials said work on restoration of 15 temple tanks, which started in September, is expected to be completed this month. Restoration of 22 waterbodies will also be completed.

“Installation of rooftop solar panels in 662 public buildings will be completed in February,” said an official. Work on gardens in bridges started on September 24 and is expected to be completed this month, he added.

The plan for the Integrated Command and Control Centre has been finalised at an estimated cost of ₹149 crore.

The Corporation officials visited Rajkot and Mumbai to study the system and their observations have been incorporated in the city’s plan which will come up mid-2019. The command centre will incorporate a disaster management system, a city surveillance system, an ICT-based solid waste management system, smart street light monitoring, mobile command and control centre and a smart city governance portal among others.
