Shobha Menon, founder trustee of Nizhal, at the section of the Kotturpuram Tree Park where trees were mowed to make way for Adyar river bund-strengthening work by the Water Resources Department of Public Works Department. The PWD has promised to carry out a planting exercise on the area, and source saplings of the same species, also from the same places from where they were originally sourced. “We have asked for taller saplings, and have also said that the fencing has to be restored,” says Shobha. She points to a couple of felled trees that the contract workers have tried to replant. She is skeptical about the chances of these trees sprouting fresh leaves again. Meanwhile, volunteers of Kotturpuram Tree Park have started a petition on change.org, urging that the restoration of the greening exercise be carried out soon. “The work has not started as promised, and we don’t want any further delays.”
