Future of two boys uncertain as Vysarpadi school issues TC

The future of two children, who live in a slum tenement in Vyasarpadi, has become uncertain after they were given Transfer Certificates (TC) by their school following a fracas involving their parents and the school.

While the parents claimed the school authorities had issued the TCs for lodging a police complaint against the school after one of the boys was injured, the Education Department of the Chennai Corporation said the TCs were given on the parents’ request.

This issue has, however, snowballed into a controversy in the locality, with the police officials being drawn in for supporting the school authorities.

Adhilakshmi is a resident of B.V. Colony, Vyasarpadi. She resides with her husband Arul and five children.

She admitted Thamizhselvan, 9, Satish, 8, and Sanjana, 5, at Chennai Primary School, Vyasarpadi.

On the evening of July 12, Ms. Adhilakshmi was informed by the school authorities that Thamizhselvan, studying in Class IV, had sustained an injury.

Her son told her that he fell after a teacher pushed him.

He suffered a fracture on his left hand.

Ms. Adhilakshmi claimed that when she confronted the school authorities, they told her that some students had pushed him.

Not satisfied with the reply of the school authorities, she filed a complaint with the Vyasarpadi police station.

In the meantime, she claimed the school authorities called the boy’s father and issued the TC not only to Thamizhselvan but also to their younger son, Satish. However, she pointed out that her daughter Sanjana was still studying in the kindergarten section.

The news about the boy suffering a fracture after being being pushed spread quickly on social media.

No pressure, say police

A senior police official said a complaint had been filed at the Vyasarpadi police station, for which a Community Service Register (CSR) had been issued.

However, the official denied that any pressure was being exerted on the family to withdraw the complaint.

A senior official of the Education Department of the Corporation said they held an inquiry into the incident and found that the boy was not pushed by the class teacher but by some students when they were leaving school.

The official said: “The headmaster of the school, on coming to know about the boy’s injury, took him to a hospital and arranged for first aid.”
