The Federation of Residents Welfare Association, Pallikaranai, an umbrella organisation representing 11 residents welfare associations in the region, seeks Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board to expedite the construction of sewage drains in Ward 189, 190 and 191 in Zone 14. N. Sundaram, the president of the federation says, “The work which began in 2010 moves at a tardy pace. In 2017, the work was put on hold and till now it has not resumed. In the absence of sewage drains, groundwater is getting contaminated.”
Residents say the sewage drains have been constructed at Balaji Nagar, AGS Colony, MAPOC Nagar, Kamakoti Nagar, IIT Colony, AGS Colony, Syndicate Bank Colony, Manahor Nagar, Periyar Nagar, Ashta Lakshmi Nagar and Ambal Colony.
“There are a few more localities near Varadharajapuram where sewage drain work needs to be completed,” says Sundaram.
Similarly, the federation is seeking expedition of drinking water pipe construction.
“In the absence of CMWSSB water, we are dependent on private suppliers. Water is being extracted from Sitheri lake, Narayanapuram lake, and a few other small ponds including the one behind the Guindy Machine Tools. This is not a sustainable method. Construction of drinking water pipes began in mid 2017 but again it was put on hold. Just six months ago, work got resumed. We organised a protest in March to draw the attention of the civic officials,” says Sundaram.
