‘Evidence in gutkha scam destroyed’

Arappor Iyakkam, a voluntary organisation fighting corruption, has submitted a memorandum to Home Secretary/Vigilance Commissioner Niranjan Mardi alleging destruction of evidence in the gutkha scam.

Questioning why the report of the Income Tax Department submitted to the then Chief Secretary, P.S. Rama Mohana Rao, which contained details of corruption involving a State Minister and top officials was not forwarded to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) for investigation, the movement’s convener Jayaram Venkatesan said he learnt from media reports and other sources that the report was now missing.

Stating that this was a clear case of destruction of evidence, he urged the Home Secretary to write to the Income Tax Department seeking a copy of the report and initiate action against those officials who destroyed the documents.
