Direct bus from Perumbakkam to Chintadripet helps students

Priya*, a Plus Two student studying in Chintadripet, had to change two buses and a train to reach her school from her home in the Perumbakkam Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) tenements. She heaved a sigh of relief on Monday after the TNSCB, with the help of MTC, introduced a bus to travel to school and back.

Close to 421 families, including Priya’s, residing in Navalur Nedunchezhian Nagar in Chintadripet, were shifted to Perumbakkam TNSCB tenements in November. There were hundreds of students in a similar predicament.

40-km travel

After shifting to Perumbakkam, many students had to travel over 40 km to and fro every day. “Since they were shifted in the middle of the academic year, they wanted to continue in their old schools. Besides, there are no good schools in Perumbakkam,” said Manikandan, a parent.

Hence, many parents approached the MTC for operating the services. “We wrote to them in January seeking services for school students. They finally started it on Monday. On the first day, 65 students used the services,” said Ram, another parent.

‘Reached on time’

Students were happy after the service was introduced. “On Monday, I studied on the way to school and back as I did not have to change buses. It was very comfortable. Besides, we used to reach school late every day due to the long distance travel, now we can be punctual,” said Priya.

The TNSCB officials said that route number 221 cut service will be operated in the mornings and evenings. “Based on the demand we will increase the number of services. We have already arranged six services between Perumbakkam and Greames Road for the benefit of students,” said a TNSCB official.
