The city police claim they have nabbed a suspect who went on a chain-snatching spree from Sunday, targeting women who were walking on the roads.

On Sunday morning, two bike-borne men struck women walking alone in Ice House, Royapettah and Kotturpuram and went on a robbing spree in a few other places. In one of the incidents, the suspects targeted Selvi, 42, a resident of Erikkarai, in Kotturpuram, who was returning after attending a wedding around 7 a.m.

The CCTV footage, which went viral, showed Selvi walking alone. Two suspects follow her, the pillion rider snatches her chain. The alert woman holds on to the chain but falls on the road. After dragging her on for a few feet, the accused give up and race away.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mylapore, N.M. Mylvahanan, addressing mediapersons here said: “We identified the suspects quickly with the help of CCTV footage and got vital clues on the whereabouts of the accused. A special team constituted under Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kotturpuram, fanned out to nab the accused. In the early hours of Tuesday, we managed to secure one of the accused — Rakesh. He was the pillion rider. We are searching for the other accused. These duo committed snatching at several places.”

The two operated in Teynampet, Adambakkam, Tirumangalam and MKB Nagar, in total eight places in the city from Sunday morning.

“We managed to solve the crime and nab the accused within 36 hours of occurrence, thanks in large measure to the CCTV footage. CCTVs are helping us solve cases quickly,” said Mr. Mylvahanan.
