“India, a land of unity in diversity, is home to people of all faiths. Bharat, that is India, has given solace to all those who came to her, just like a mother who feeds the children that run to her seeking comfort in her company,” said Banwarilal Purohit, Governor of Tamil Nadu, who was the chief guest at the Eid Milan celebrations here in Chennai on Monday.
The event, convened by G.S.M.P. Khadri, was organised by the Committee of Hosts in which cheques were presented to Hindu, Muslim and Christian charitable organisations.
A booklet on the status of women in Islam was released.
Justice F.M. Ibrahim Kalifullah, former Judge, Supreme Court of India, who was the guest of honour for the evening, said, “We should know the vision of the framers of the constitution.”
“It has withstood the test of time. In the hierarchy of legislation, the Constitution is number one, then comes the statutes, rules and violations. You will find that day in and day out – very many such government orders are not able to withstand the test of its constitutionality. Whereas the 395 articles in the Constitution have withstood the test of time,” he said.
Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali presided over the function.
