Avvai Shanmugam Salai junction waterlogged due to pipeline leak

When many parts of the city continue to reel under water shortage, residents of Royapettah and Gopalapuram were shocked to see the Avvai Shanmugam Salai junction under sheets of water on Tuesday morning.

Though the area had experienced overnight rain, a leak in a water pipeline had led to waterlogging. Peak hour traffic on the road was disrupted. Water gushed out of a pit dug up in the junction from early Tuesday, flooding the area.

Officials of Chennai Metrowater said the pit was dug up to cut a portion of a water pipeline and to check sewage contamination.

“We had received complaints about sewage mixing in drinking water from the area. A pit was dug and the pipe was cut to check the source of pollution. We had closed the pipeline on Monday,” said an official.

However, the pit had reportedly silted up during rain at night. When water was released in the morning, the pipeline gave way due to pressure, sources said.

The leak was arrested around 9 a.m., the official added.
