The Prison Department has effected a major reshuffle of staff at the Central Prison in Puzhal, following an inquiry into allegations of corruption and undue favours to prisoners.
Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons Ashtosh Shukla issued orders effecting the transfers of officials.
Sources said that following the leak of pictures of prison cells taken by prisoners using mobile phones, a probe was conducted on the officials who were allegedly involved, and action was taken.
Chief Head Warders — G. Vijayaraj and T. Ganesan of Central Prison – I, Puzhal — were transferred on administrative grounds and posted to Sub-Jails in Ooty and Chengam respectively.
Grade I Warders — A. Pavadairayar, J. Jebastin Selvkumar, N. Singaravelan, N. Subramani, D. Selvakumar and P. Prathapsingh — were posted to prisons in Vellore, Coimbatore, Salem and Tiruchi.
“The Superintendents of Prisons have been instructed to give non-sensitive assignments to these warders, as their integrity is in doubt,” said an order issued by the Prison Department.
