The Idol Wing CID on Saturday seized a panchaloha Murugan idol from a workshop in Ekkattuthangal. The smugglers had planned to sell the antique for ₹1 crore.
Following credible information on the concealment of the idol in a lathe, the High Court-appointed special officer A.G. Ponn Manickavel, along with ASP Rajaram, DSP P.A.Sundaram and six constables, raided the workshop.
On searching the premises, the police found the idol concealed in a steel bureau and arrested the owner of the workshop, Sivakumar. Mr. Manickavel said, “DSP Sundaram registered the First Information Report and has taken up the case for investigation.”
According to officers, the idol is between 75 and 100 years old and was stolen from a temple in Nemili, near Arakkonam. It weighs around 3.5 kg.
Desanadigal of Nemili, Mukesh of Kanniyakumari and Ismail Bhai of Gerugambakkam are suspected to be involved in the offence.
